12Km starters off to a smooth start

NAB RunWest starters for the inaugural 12Km event will benefit from a million-dollar upgrade of Sydney Motorsport Park’s main straight and pit exit.

Brabham Straight, named after iconic Aussie motor racing legend and Formula One world champion Jack Brabham, has been given a fresh new surface which will give entrants a wonderfully smooth run into Turn 1 of the iconic race track.

Significant maintenance was carried out in the new year period, considered a quiet time in the calendar of events at Sydney Motorsport Park which is booked out most days of the year, to maintain the world-class facilities.

For motorsport fans, the 10,800 square meters of resurfacing spans the exit of the final corner of Brabham Straight to join with last year’s resurfaced section at Moffat Corner (Turn 1) near the 100m marker.  The pit exit has also been relaid from Flagpoint 1 (pit control) to the exit of the first corner, with new timing loops being installed at the start line and both ends of the pit lane.

According to Glenn Matthews, CEO of the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club which operates the circuit, “This is great news not only for our competitors and track enthusiasts, but also for the tens of thousands of spectators who visit SMSP every year. We have spent over $20 million in the last seven years to make SMSP the world class venue it is today.”
